He was living in I guess part of what is now Austria. His people were mostly ethnic Poles, that had lived throughout Austria-Hungary (etc.) for some time.
Anywho...at some point, his part of Austria became part of Germany...and the new folks in charge sent paired trucks through the town. Able bodied men (who weren't Jews, political dissenters, communists, etc.) basically had a choice as to which truck they got on. One truck was headed to become soldiers. One truck was headed to the "labor" camps. My Opa got on the truck headed for the army. He actually came in at a mid NCO level since he had previous military experience in Romania.
